Working on Nida's Garden and a VLOG

Hello everyone!  Did you have a really nice day?

I had a looooooooooooooooooong day quilting.  I quilted for about 8 hours today.  Lots of standing.  I'm not totally satisfied with my quilt right now, but I'm hoping it will grow on me.  I am that way with everything I make.  By the time I get it done, I don't like it anymore.  Then I put it away for awhile, and the next time I see it, I forget all the boo boos I made and how much UNquilting I did, and it begins to look pretty good to me.

I took a short break just before lunch to talk to you.  Here it is if you would like to hear about the missionary dresses and a few other things my mouth decided to talk about.

I'll take pics of the little girl dresses when Terry comes back with more information on HOW we are going to make them.

THANK YOU SO MUCH to the very nice lady who offered to help us.  Wish you could join us here in my sewing room.  We could have an assembly line!

I did NOT finish Nida's Garden.  I spent lots of time UNquilting the bottom of the quilt where the borders are.  I am stuck on how to do the sashing.  After 8 hours, I decided I really needed to quit until tomorrow.

I am the type of personality that has to FINISH what I start.  I go too long, and then I mess up.  There is NO REASON for me to do that since I'm not on a clock, but my brain doesn't seem to grasp that ideology.

OH, OH, OH!  For my sewing friends:

Did you notice that Louise Cutting has a Youtube Channel now?

I was just thinking the other day while I was watching Peggy's Youtube videos that some of the other sewing teachers should have a Youtube Channel too.  Peggy's business has exploded since she began doing all her free videos.

Louise's camera really makes a racket in the videos. Every time the camera person zooms in and out, you can hear it.  I don't know if she had the volume up too high or what.  I actually just bought a new video camera myself.  Haven't gotten it yet.  If it does that, I will send it back!
Be back soon.

Hugs, Joy

  1. Hey Joy, I sure have enjoyed your last couple of videos. I love the quilt that you have been working on. It was funny last weekend to come home from the OKC quilt show to see your post all about your quilt.
I went with my daughter who had just started sewing right before Christmas. She has been a scrapper for years but never sewed anything. A few months ago I was able to pick up a really nice Bernina 930 from a lady in Edmond who had it on Craig's list.
You know what a workhorse machine that is and I could not resist getting it. So now we have twin machines and I am helping her learn to use it and loving the time we get to spend together. My Michelle made Santa hat chair covers for her first project and now I think she is hooked. I am not so sure she will be a garment sewer but a craft sewer for sure. She really enjoyed the quilt show and I did too. I wanted to go just to see what new gadgets the vendors were showing. I did watch Louise on YouTube today and was glad to see that she was going to start doing videos for us. I also thought her camera was a little noisy when it zoomed in and out.
I hope J&J are doing well. We had to put my daughter's fur baby down last Monday and it has been a real sad time for us all. Michelle got him from a rescue center 16 years ago and he was her constant companion. Have a wonderful weekend and keep on sharing with us. You always make me smile.

    1. Hey Anita! How are you???
I have TWO 930's. The 930 was the very first Bernina machine I bought in 1986. It is STILL my favorite as to dependability and stitching. No computer to break down or get confused. I bought one of the 930's on Ebay. I bought it for my granddaughter, Lindy, who loved to sew at the time and even made her Dad a quilt. Shortly thereafter her interests changed, and she hasn't sewn since. )-:

  2. Anita, I say the same thing about Joy; she always makes me smile and usually makes me crack up laughing. Wednesday, I was really unhappy with my daughter and my morning email to Joy was filled with my frustrations of the situation. Instead of sending me an email, she called me that day. It was so good to hear her voice. She had me laughing, as usual, on the phone. Everyone knows when I'm talking to Joy on the phone because I laugh so much. I felt much better when we hung up the phone.

Joy, I would want the blue borders to be restful since the rest of the quilt is so busy. I would probably do a simple "e l" (small loop, tall loop) on the inner border if it is less than two inches wide. The outer navy border I'd do a connecting backwards "C". There is a much better name for it but I can't think of the name at the moment. It has been much too long since I've done any quilting!

As for my "Eternal Bra"; I've got the cups in and the channeling around the cups. Next up is the bottom elastic, the top elastic, the neckline elastic, the straps, finishing up the channeling, and then the hooks and eyes. It would be a lot more fun if you were here making me laugh while I am doing it. I might finish it tomorrow. Then comes the big question; will it fit?

Better get going. The next big question is: Will this actually post after I publish it?

  3. I'm as quiet in personality type as you are bubbly, but we have at least one thing in common: I feel the same way about projects I've just completed, so I guess that means we are both perfectionists. Ha, ha.

The iPhone 6 is great, I've had mine for a few months. Same experience with the thumb print, it rarely works. Probably because my hands are in water a lot and I use lotion frequently. Thanks for reminding me that now the pedometer function of my Walkmeter app will work! It was inactive with my old iPhone, which didn't have the right sensor in it to record steps. Nine miles for 2000+ steps seems high, you may want to calibrate your health app if you care about distance traveled. Back when I was using a regular pedometer I'd get about 2-3 miles for around 2500 steps, if memory serves.

As usual, your vlog was a pleasure to watch. Have a great day!

    1. OH MY! NO! It was .9 miles. I'm going to do better today. Once I finish this quilt, I won't be standing in one spot most of the day. Thanks for your comment!

    2. LOL - so much for my ability to multitask! I was working on something while listening to your video and misunderstood. The Walkmeter app is cool because it does not rely on number of steps for distance traveled, like a pedometer does. It tracks your actual movements like the navigation system on a car - it can even show you a little map of where you walked (I've only tried it out once, on a walk around my neighborhood.) Spooky and cool at the same time. Ha, ha.
