Back Home and Saddened by Book

I folded more fabric this morning until I decided the remaining pieces could just rest on the bed until my next visit.  I showered, packed everything into my car, and headed South to Kingston, OK.  I did a little something different this time though.

I joined Audible.com quite some time ago.  You have to buy one audible book a month.  If you don't you get a credit, and your credits just keep adding up.  I have a real hard time finding books I would even read because I won't listen to cursing, ugliness or sex trash.  I had already gotten most of Joel Osteen's books and even his Mother's book and his Sister's book.  I HAD to find some other kind of books to order or get out of the club.

One day after receiving the millionth email telling me I needed to use my credits, I went to the search bar.  I put in "quilt books".  The whole series of Elm Creek Quilt books came up.  I saw the author of those books on a quilt show one time, and I meant to check into the books back then, but never did.

The audible books had very good reviews, so I decided to order several of them.  I listened to one of the books while I was folding up all that fabric at first in my Kingston home.  It was pretty good.

I had started listening to the second book called "The Lost Quilter" while folding up fabric in my Edmond home.  I decided to figure out how to get it to play in my car BEFORE I STARTED DRIVING, and I was able to get it to play from Chapter 10 where I had left off.  It is a heart wrenching story of a young slave girl who loved to sew and to make quilts.  The most awful things happened to her and to other girls in the story.  It was making me so sad because I'm sure things like that truly did happen and worse things.  When I "read" a book, I get pictures in my head of what is being said in the book, and I imagine that I am the character.  I could not imagine a human being living through such torture and humiliation.  Some didn't.

Anyway, it made me very sad.  I haven't finished the book yet, and I am hoping it has a happy ending SOMEHOW.

It is very good to be home.  Hate I missed Diana and her husband's visit yesterday when they came to pick up the boat Jerry sold to them.  We will get together again soon though.  Terry won't be home until Friday, and then she is having company for five days.  Everyone is SO BUSY!

Hold on.  I have a picture of Terry and Marty -- somewhere -- in front of their "new" boat:

Diana looks like a little girl next to him.  I will meet him another time.  SOON, I hope.  Diana just texted me and told me that Marty built a ladder for the boat.  He also polished the whole thing.  It sparkles like a new dime.  Jerry did the same thing when he bought it years ago.

I'm going back to work at our store tomorrow.  Some of you may remember when Candi, my office manager, had back surgery over a year ago, and I had to go back.  Well, the surgery was unsuccessful, and she is going back for another surgery.  She has no idea how long she will be gone.  I'm praying for good reports from start to finish!

Be back soon.

Hugs, Joy

  1. I don't know if her books are on Audible but you might try the author Lawana Blackwell. She has a series of 6 books set in the late 1800's/early 1900's England that tell the story of a fancy London woman with children whose husband died. All he had left from his estate was a country house and the stories are all about a belief in God, perseverance, personal strength, and re-birth. It's best to listen to the earliest one first since they are progressively told and build off one another. There's a couple of elderly tatters across the street from her and they are the first time I'd ever heard of tatting (hand lace making). They are very "clean" books and I couldn't get enough of them. Then one of the best books I've ever read was "The Shoemaker's Wife". It's a love story about Italian immigrants to the US in the early 1900's who met in Italy as children and different circumstances brought them to the US at different times. Then they met again later. She was a costume seamstress for the NY Met Opera and this entire tale is based on a true story of the author's grandparents. Fabulous, fabulous, book: love story, history, and sewing. Perfect! I also learned a lot about the US Immigration System and how people who came to the US had to have sponsors and a place to live, a prospective job, had to pass through medical tests so they didn't bring diseases, and had to learn English. It was very eye opening. She got very seasick on the trip over to the point she had to be hospitalized on arrival and was terrified that they would send her back to Italy. Really great book.

    1. Thank you so much! I doubt the books are on Audible, but I sure will check. If not, I'll order the first one and the shoemaker one from Amazon.

  2. Joy Good afternoon! My name is Christine Jacobs. But I go by Teena. I have been watching you on You Tube.. and have told my neighbor about you. Each time I see her she or I will ask if either have watched you today.... I enjoy your videos so much I laughed my butt off on the one where you made pinkie! When you turned around and saw yourself in the pink duct tape you lost it and I could not stop laughing either. I am so thrilled to see someone of the same age have fun and just be yourself, no pretending to be a professional on camera, you just have fun in a natural way. You are so funny. I have been sewing for over 50 years, but I do not quilt... I have the short term gratification syndrome,Ha! I have a large house and I have turned it into a sewing studio. Or,that is what I call it. I have 6 machines and use them most every day. I finally have the time and the room to sew at my leisure. Retirement is the best!
I make doll clothes for the American Girl dolls, and sell them for the extra income ( to buy more material) ha! Would love to send pictures. I must say it pains me to hear that you are going to take the fabric to goodwill......I am yelling Joy! I will pay for postage send it to me..hahahah! I too have so much. But hey, they say the one with the most wins. Someday I think it would be fun to meet you. I have a lot of energy also... oh gosh. Well I have to go for now, time to see if you have a new video on You Tube.
    Take are

  4. Hi Joy! My name is Mary Flynn, and I just love your shnanagains, you make me laugh and I look forward to your posts and videos on YouTube. I stumbled upon you on Sure fit Designs and started watching all your youtube videos, I spent one whole weekend just finding ones I hadn't seen and you got funnier and funnier, your videos encouraged me to begin sewing for myself again. The past 15 years or so was quilting stuff which I love but I was not happy with the retail market sO I ordered SFD system and now on a fabric buying spree. Wish I lived closer,I'm way down south, I would love to get to meet you. Has anyone ever told you that your personality resembles Joyce Meyer, well I think so!! She laughs at herself and so do you!! I love that you love our sweet Lord and you know him. OK enough rambling on, have a great 4th of July and by the way Diana and her husband are just precious!!

    Bye Joy,

  5. Hello Joy, I have been away from Singapore for a while as I have travelled back to my home country of the UK for a visit, I still like to catch up with your vlogs they are so uplifting, interesting and educational with needlework. My friend and I that are making our slopers with the SFD have decided to start all over again from the beginning as we have learned so much we feel we need to start afresh, the only thing is we have not made any clothes for ourselves for months and are really missing this, we have turned our attention to making bags instead. My friend and I will be travelling for the next few months and only able to get together at the end of August, hopefully we can crack this sloper first time when we get to it. We are always interested to hear your experiences with fabric and patterns. I am off to Japan for a couple of weeks on the bullet train and cruise, then the UK again, that will be the “summer season” gone but on our return its always hot in Singapore so like summer everyday. Have a great summer yourself and I very much look forward to your next vlog.

  6. Love, love those books!!! I have read them all and have most of them. There are quite a few. She also wrote Mrs. Lincoln's Dressmaker and Mrs. Lincoln's Rival, both good. I sew garments, not quilts much but these made me wish the quilt school was real and I could go. The books mentioned by Becky, above sound interesting also. Enjoy your videos, too. Carolyn F.
