Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Long and Preachy. Feel Free to Skip! (-;

I was informed today that I have "NPD" which is my shortened version of Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Good heavens, I can hardly spell it!  I had never heard of it, so I had to look it up.

Definition
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they're superior to others and have little regard for other people's feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.
Narcissistic personality disorder is one of several types of personality disorders. Personality disorders are conditions in which people have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in relationships and in other areas of their life, such as work or school.

Actually, I DO KNOW my personality.  I took a lot of tests when I was in my twenties.  There were several books written about it.  Phylly told me she had taken some tests like that too.

According to those tests, I am half "Choleric" and half "Melancholy".  I bet that book is here in my bookcase somewhere.

These are NOT the kind of tests you can cheat on.  There were only 4 types of personalities.  Each one had 10 good traits and 10 bad traits, so there was no reason to cheat.
"Choleric" people are major perfectionists.  They are very organized, like to be in control, and they are usually good at it.  (NOT my definition.  It is from the book.)

"Melancholy" people are organized, take lots of notes, make lists and they love music.  They like everything to be in order, and they keep track of it -- hence, the lists.  Often, they have musical ability of some sort.  I don't have any musical abilities other than an attempt to sing music that I love.

The lady that wrote the book -- and I can't think of her name right now -- had a husband who was a Melancholy.  He measured the silverware's placement on a table setting to be sure it was a thumb's distance from the edge of the table.

I DO THAT!!!  I can just eyeball it now, of course, since I've done it forever.  (I did NOT doctor the below picture.  Notice how it says "Utensils are placed one inch from the edge of the table.")

The only way I would label one person "superior" to another would have to do with talent or ability.

THAT, however, doesn't make anyone SUPERIOR to another person.

My preacher says it well:   "Ignorance is curable.  Stupidity is not."

There is ALWAYS going to be somebody who is smarter than I am, richer than I am, more talented BY FAR than I am, and on and on and on.....  I don't feel like like I'm "superior" to ANY person as we are all God's beloved creation.  God looks on our hearts, and we are all special in His eyes.  The Bible says He knew us from our Mother's womb, and He has a plan for each of our lives.

Does everyone fulfill the plan God has for them.  NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  Therein lies the problem.  People make wrong choices and they screw up their lives, and then most want to blame everyone but themselves for the mess they are in.

Did I ever make wrong choices?

You betcha!, as Sarah Palin would say.

Was I sorry?  I was.

Did I pay a price for my bad choices?  Sure did.

God said, "MY people perish for lack of knowledge."  That's the number one huge problem.  People don't even know who God is, never mind who they are.

Eventually, I found a good church.  I went to a Billy Graham crusade.  I listened to tapes from really good preachers.  I read the Bible all the way through.  I learned HOW to make right choices.

Now, insofar as "having little regard for other people's feelings".  This is VERY TRUE!  You can put me on the very top of the list of those who refuse to be POLITICALLY CORRECT.  In my book, that is equal to Godlessness.  The Bible says, "To see evil and not call it evil, is evil!"

So, you got me there.

If you lie to me, I will call you a liar.
If you have an abortion, I will say you murdered your baby.
If you are a homosexual or lesbian, I will say it is a sin.
If you steal something from me, I will call you a thief.
If you have something on TV that includes cursing my God or using filthy language, I will simply leave.
ETC.

Does this mean I think I'm BETTER or SUPERIOR?  NO, NO, NO!  It means I'm forgiven, and you should get forgiven too.

My own girls got very upset with me when they were young over my opinion of their gay friends.  I didn't change my belief to be anti-Bible just because my children disagreed with it.

THE THING IS, however, I will tell you in the NEXT BREATH that I love you, God loves you, and God will forgive you, and you can choose to change.  I happen to BELIEVE the Bible is the inspired, indisputable Word of God.  God makes the rules, and we don't get to change them.  That does make me very politically INcorrect.  I'll stand before God someday with everyone else, and we'll see how politically correct God was.

Just wanted you to know about this dread condition this person attributes to me.  I'm sorry she feels that way.  I thank God that I have a husband who adores me and has been faithful to me for 39 years.  I have very WONDERFUL friends who actually like me in spite of this supposed dread malady.  I pray this person and her family have a long, happy life and NEVER get this dread disease themselves.

I have some new pictures to show you BUT I left my camera cord at the other house.

I have ordered another one, but it won't be here until Wednesday.  I'll be back with pics then.

HUGS, Joy

  1. I enjoyed the realness of this post. I think there is nothing wrong with being unapologetically you! Besides, people that make immoral choices are unapologetically stubborn about the choices they make. It takes courage to live out the word of God. Boldness and courage, because it goes against the culture in which we live, but it sets us each free!!

  2. You go girl. You are right on. You come across to me as a very happy person and your enthusiasm is contagious. I love your videos especially the ones that show how to use the SFD patterns. I had the pattern maker kits but never did much with them until I watched your videos. I got them out and have perfected my patterns now and have been sewing somethings I would really wear thanks to you. Happy confident people have better personalities than
shallow people who say mean thing.

  3. Joy---You are one of my Spiritual partners on the net. I am inspired to be a better Christian because of your strong faith. Today your message taught me we must continue to pray for those who persecute us...name calling is persecution. Christ, when asked to condemn the adulteress, said for the person without sin to cast the first stone. Hmm. The crowd dropped their stones and quietly slipped away. Then, he told the adulteress to "go, and sin no more." I agree with you...we must all live/strive to be the best possible follower of Christ and that means following his teachings...all of them...not just the ones that suit us at the moment. Not easy---but because of Christ's sacrifice on the cross I am saved and promised life eternal.

You are one of my best, go to, spiritual leaders and I am so thankful I was lead to your blog.

You are someone who inspires me to keep striving for the very best in all I do.

Thank you! I think you ROCK!

  4. Oh, my, my, my! When I got up off the floor from laughing so hard, I tried to figure out what that person would call me. I'll have to Google the Mayo Clinic and see if there is a Disorder called a "Be Everything to Everybody, with a Touch of Perfectionist and Trying Not to Lose Control Disorder". That would be me!
If I remember right I was a Melancholic Phlegmatic with just a touch of Choleric thrown in for good measure. In other words, I want order and peace and if I have to, I'll take charge to see that I get it.

I dare say that we all have a bit of NPD in us and if he or she knew you better they would love you just like I do. Besides, my bet is that a person that would say that has a lot of neuroses of their own.

    Love you, girl!

    Hugs, Phylly

  7. Unless you are told such a thing by a professional, I would totally disregard the diagnosis. Sounds like someone is angry and out to hurt you as much as possible.

    1. Yes, MK, you got it exactly right. It was a very small part of a long, hateful comment I received which included lots of threats. Very common for this person. I was trying to make something very ugly into something funny. I feel very sorry for this young lady because she is so full of anger. Wish I could help her.
