New Quilt Update and a Video

I am SOOOOO excited.

You know I am making one of Edyta Sitar's applique quilts called:  Seasonal Silhouettes

I JUST FINISHED the last block five minutes ago.  Details have not been drawn in and the edges of the appliques have not been sewn down.

The basket on the bottom left is the block I had problems with that Edyta is going to replace for me.  VERY nice.  She thinks I messed it up by ironing too much, but if that is true, how did all the other blocks work out?

I made a video for you this morning.

Actually, I made TWO videos for you today, but only one is uploaded.

Here it is:

Jerry is home, and I have to go make some shakes.  We had Fire Extinguisher Chili for lunch.  I'll tell you about it in my next video.

Be back soon.

Hugs, Joy

  1. I do like this crochet-thing, but it sure takes a looong time to finish something!! One get these little roll-ups for your hooks like for the kids' coloring pencils....or you can make one.... Your applique-blocks looks lovely! And you look as if you have lost more weight! Take care of yourself!

  2. Hello Joy
    Love you on YouTube.
Self-taught crochet junkie here. Try a piece of contrasting yarn for that m.i.a. stitch marker.
Also if you have a rectangular ufo piece of quilted fabric, you can fold up the long edge and with your zipper foot make channels for each hook as you acquire them.
    Happy Hooking

  4. Joy, forgot to give you directions of how to navigate http://foodvacbags.com/ to find the rods to seal bags like you struggled with as you tried to close the animal cracker bag. On food.vac bag home page go to Products we love and scroll to GripStic.Bag Sealing Rods. Enjoy. Diane Fite

  5. Joy, my first comment did not show up so I am trying again.
    So happy you're feeling better.
As I watched you struggle with animal cracker package I knew I should share how you can keep them fresh using GripStic Bag Sealing Rods. I use them on cereal bags, frozen food bags, chip bags and anything in a bag I want to keep.fresh. My son's business started with vac bags. I love them useable with so many types of sealers. Website is http://foodvacbags.com/. Anything you bag for hobbies could be sealed with a rod. Easy to use and remove. Diane Fite

  7. Joy, first of all. I just love your videos, too bad you can't see us and our chuckles while watching you. I crochet & knit along with sewing and jewelry making. I guess we are alike in that we both like learning new thing. Everyone already mentioned using another colored yarn for the MIA markers.
Your quilt is stunning. I love florals so you hit the mark for me. Oh, I don't quilt but I might learn b/c this quilt is so inspiring. Now do zigzag around each item, then sew them together? Will you be adding cloth between the blocks? I can't wait to see the finished quilt. Would you mind me asking what the price is for the package, if not comfortable with that, I understand. Glad all worked out with Sitar. Take care

  8. Your quilt is going to look great :)
For storage of your crochet hooks I would make a roll that's how I store my knitting needles.

  9. Hi Joy,
Your newest quilt is beautiful so far. I am glad that you are trying a hand at crocheting. I find it enjoyable and relaxing. I have been crocheting for about 50 yrs. There are a multitude of ways to store your crochet hooks and you will discover the best for you. I recently crocheted a holder for mine that I saw on Pinterest. I wish I could post a picture but can't figure out how in the comments. Anyway, have fun with it. There are so many different things to make crocheting.

  10. That Edyta Sitar quilt is stunning ! I can see why you are making it but I do not envy you ZZ around each section !!! The last time I did that was for a quilt for my GD and as I drew the simple objects they were not as complicated and delicate as your quilt ! A friend told me that she bought an emboidery sewing machine that has a camera in it...you take a picture of the applique and it does the ZZ stitch around the applique !...I am thinking it is Babylock...amazing technology . Anyway..the fast way you sew I can hardly wait to see your finished project ! Mary

  11. Love your videos. Most patterns usually have somewhere near the beginning of the instructions have some sort of notation about gauge. It will say something about if you use the recommended yarn and needle your gauge block should be xx number of stitches by yy number of rows equals zz number of inches. Making your own gauge block every time you start a new pattern is very important if you want your project to be the exact same size as the pattern (like in garment making) for two reasons: 1. everyone crochets and knits at a different tension and 2. if you change the yarn. So make a gauge block the same number of stitches across and the same number of rows long and compare the size of your block to the one in the pattern. If your block is bigger, you will need to change to a smaller crochet hook. Keep making gauge blocks until your adjusted block is the same size as the stated in the pattern. If your gauge block is smaller, change to a bigger hook. The reason you need a variety of sizes of hooks is illustrated in the following story: My friend started an afghan for her boyfriend and didn't finish before they broke up. So she gave me the half done piece, the untouched balls of yarn and her crochet hook. Because she crochets loosey-goosey and I crochet really tight, I had to increase the size of crochet hook 4 sizes before the stitches looked even. That's why your project is so much smaller... with a scarf it's as important than with a sweater, you'd be giving a sweater away because you'd never get it on... one-third too small.... so next time make a gauge block before you start so you get the right size... but like you say, no one will know it's the wrong size except you, so don't sweat the small stuff. I keep my crochet hooks in an eye glass case that has a fold over flap so the hooks can't fall out. The roll-ups are nice because each hook has a pocket so you know when one is missing. My knitting needles are in a zippered case that has elastic loops to hold each needle in place... I use a safety pin as a stitch marker. The same safety pins I bought when I pin basted my quilts. I like to put a safety pin every ten rows... 4 pins equals 40 rows. You could even use a bobby-pin. Someone mentioned a different colored scrap piece of yarn. You want different colored so you can find it easy and I always tie mine on with a bow tie so they don't accidentally fall out. I use a bow tie so it's easy to take out when the project is finished. Hope this helps.

  12. I see that you are wearing the Demi Drape Top. Did you do a FBA on the cowl pattern piece, or just on the camisole pattern piece?

    1. I did it only in the under layer. The over layer is big enough.
